The City of Pleasant Ridge is investigating the idea of partnering with the County of Oakland to operate their Animal Control Division. As a small City, it is difficult to provide stray or lost animals the proper care and attention needed to meet their needs. Our police Officers will routinely pick up animals, that are then kept in the station until a home is found or a shelter is contacted.
Enforcement of the Michigan State Dog Law is key to happy and healthy pets within our community. By using the Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center we will have 10 full-time and 3 part-time Animal Control Officers, helping us enforce the Michigan State Dog Law. The County has a detailed program for handling all types of animals.
Stray Animals
In accordance with Michigan state law, strays are held for four to seven days in order to help the owner find and claim the animal. If you have lost an animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter in person or go on-line to learn how to recover a lost pet. After four to seven days the animal becomes the property of Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center and may be available for public adoption. The Oakland County Animal Control & Pet Adoption Center posts pictures of the stray cats and dogs currently in the shelter online. This is updated 6 days a week
Surrendered Animals
Animals that are surrendered to Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center by their owner may be available for immediate adoption, after they receive proper veterinary care. Please note that there is a $34.00 fee to surrender an animal.
Dog Licenses
Michigan State Law requires that all dogs over four (4) months old be licensed. To obtain a dog license, you will need to provide proof of current rabies vaccination and proof of spaying/neutering (if applicable) at the time you purchase the license. In accordance with the laws of the State of Michigan, this information must be provided every time you renew your dog license. Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center sells one year and three year dog licenses throughout the year.
The City is looking into the collaborating with the County of Oakland to offer these services for the City of Pleasant Ridge.
Possible Savings: $3,000-$8,000 per year.
