The City of Ypsilanti has partnered with Washtenaw County to provide dog and kennel licenses to the residents. The County will now be responsible for collecting applications and fees from Ypsilanti dog owners. This consolidation effort will most likely be permanent. Until late 2012, all Ypsilanti residents obtained dog licenses from the Ypsilanti City Treasurer while all other Washtenaw County residents (with the exception of residents in Ann Arbor) visited the County Treasurer for dog license services. This partnership between Ypsilanti and Washtenaw County is to promote the use of efficient and limited resources. While this consolidation will result in a net monetary loss (the City is responsible for paying a cost to the County for the purchase of dog tags and will give up all licensing revenue - $2,810 for Fiscal Year 2011-12), it will allow for better and more efficient services within the region. Furthermore, staff time that was spent processing or enforcing dog licenses can be better spent on other services.
