In 2012 we began work on a partnership with the Sault Area Tribe, Tahquamenon Area Schools, LMAS Health Department and Helen Newberry Joy Hospital on Safe Routes to School grant to replace deteriorating sidewalks. It is too early to tell what savings this will generate, but it is a huge quality of life issue for us. We have completed the Non-motorized transportation plan for the Village in January 2013. Complete Streets resolution was adopted by Council. We anticipated working with our partners toward grant application in 2013.
Update as of 2013: For non-motorized transportation, the Village of Newberry has received a grant from the Sault Tribe for $3000.00, and another grant of $3000.00 from the Village. We have completed the Non- motorized transportation plan, and have adopted the complete streets resolution. We and are in the process of completing the walking survey. The grant of $200, 000.00 for sidewalk replacement and restoration will allow for the completion of this entire project, projected in 2014.
Update as of 2014: Walking Survey has been completed and grant application will be submitted 2014. If approved it is will go out to bid and be completed in 2014.
Barriers: This has been a lengthy process. The Village and its partners are committed to this project.
