In a cooperative effort in 1970, the City of Grand Blanc, Charter Township of Grand Blanc and the Grand Blanc Community Schools formed the Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation Commission. The purpose of the commission is to provide the represented community with a coordinated recreation system and to administer the parks and other facilities for both the active and passive recreation interest of the community.
The Commission operated as a part-time department until 1975, when it became a full-time operation. Since that time, the Parks and Recreation Department has grown to offering year-round programming that includes after school activities for K-12 grades. Programming is also offered for adults and senior citizens. During the summer months, hundreds of classes in different programs are offered for youth and adults in addition to numerous special events. The Parks and Recreation Commission is also responsible for operating and maintaining Creasey Bicentennial Recreation Complex and the Grand Blanc Senior Activity Center.
The commission allows the City the opportunity to leverage community funding to offer quality recreation and community enrichment programs. Each year the City appropriates approximately $120,000. Estimated cost savings: $300,000.
