Description
This project will build upon decades of regional planning effort, including the development of the Stage 2 Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) for each of the AOCs. The following overall outputs and outcomes are expected: 1) Significant progress towards the removal of the three fish and wildlife BUIs and eventual delisting of the Rouge River AOC; 2) Significant restoration of the Rouge River ecosystems through the removal of in-stream migration barriers and the creation/restoration of native fish habitat in a highly urbanized area of the AOC; 3) Pre-monitoring to assess/measure the anticipated outcomes of the proposed project; 4) New and enhanced outdoor recreation activities including fishing, nature observation, park usage and related opportunities; 5) Sustainable job creation and social and economic benefits resulting from increased visitor activity in the socially diverse Rouge River Watershed and communities; and 6) sustainable benefits of regional/ national significance will be achieved through a “technology transfer” element to share restoration techniques and “best practices” with other AOCs. Specifically, this project will provide the following outcomes: · At least 50 acres of native habitat will be created; · Approximately 23 acres of side channel wetlands will be created; · Ten in-line ponds will be naturalized and native habitat restored, and · 125 miles (including tributaries) of the Rouge River will be hydrologically reconnected to the Great Lakes system for the first time in over a century.
